Three Lies And A Truth About Leather

Three Lies And A Truth About Leather

Open up any social media platform and after a few cat videos and the latest chip challenge, you inevitably are hit with something relating to lies and truth about the hot topic of the day.

Here are three lies and a truth about my hot topic of the day...leather.

#1 Lie - Real leather promotes animal cruelty

This couldn't be further from the truth. Real leather is actually a buy product from the meat industry and if it wasn't used for clothing, upholstery or sport to name a few, there would be billions of tons of extra waste in landfills.

#2 Lie - Real leather is worse for the environment than fake leather

Few people realise that fake leather uses microplastics to bond fibers together during the production process. This means that when you discard that item and it ends up in the landfill, those microplastics will be all that is left...and we know how wonderful those are for the environment right?

#3 Lie - Real leather is more expensive than fake leather

Investing in one real leather jacket means that you would be able to wear that jacket for 50 years (or more if you look after it properly) whereas a top of the range fake leather jacket only has a lifespan of 15 years. This means that you would have to purchase three fake leather jackets over the same time period increasing the money you spend and the microplastic waste mentioned in lie #2.

#1 Truth - Real leather is the best option

At the end of the day choosing real leather that has been processed using recycled water and natural dyes over pleather, bonded leather and the latest "vegan" leather fast fashion craze, is the way to go. A real leather item will not only last you a lifetime but can also help you get your incognito environment warrior cape on without joining those stop oil guys.

As Vivienne Westwood said,"Buy less, choose well, and make it last."

Yours in leather
